There was somber mood at Makerere University Friday, hours after a second year student of Law at Uganda Christian University – UCU was stabbed to death at 7pm last evening.
Bewatte Betungura, was pronounced dead on arrival at the University hospital.
It is alleged that during the campaigns at the open grounds, a scuffle ensued between supporters of two rival opposition political parties which is said to have resulted in the stabbing of the deceased by students who were allegedly led by Kassanda South Member of Parliament, Frank Kabuye among others.
Betungura is said to have died of excessive blood loss.
Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) earlier owned the deceased.
“We are saddened by the death of Mr Bewatte Betungura, LLBII Student at Uganda Christian University and our strong member who had travelled to Makerere University to canvass support for his Mbarara High School Old Boy Mr Justus Tukamushaba, Our MUk Guild Presidential candidate.”
However, for most part of Friday, the mood at Makerere University remained somber.
“Couldn’t they just beat him up and let him go? Stabbing?” a group of students walking towards a lecture room discussed. But even at that, Dangote (an NUP) candidate remains on the lips of a number of students.
Presence of the police and the military remain visible on campus.
Friday polls have since been suspended as a probe into the incident continue.
Kabuye, Allan Ssekidde and Muzafaru Kabuurwa remain in police custody at the Central Police Station – Kampala, Wandegeya and Old Kampala Police Stations respectively.
