Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among has asked teachers to return to class and teach, and pledged that Parliament will hold government accountable on the pledge to increase salaries of arts teachers.
Arts teachers recently went on strike over payrise until Monday when their body Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) called off the strike. The call-off followed a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni.
Speaking about the matter yesterday, Speaker Among urged the Government to “carefully study the grievances of teachers and devise sustainable solutions with realistic immediate, medium term and long-term interventions.”
“I will require the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business consider presenting a comprehensive statement on the matter detailing Government interventions and plans to address the matter holistically and sustainably,” Among said.
In the meantime, she added, “I urge teachers to return to class and teach as Government devises sustainable remedies to their grievances.”
As a Parliament, Among pledged, “we shall hold Government accountable for their undertakings on the resolution of the industrial action by teachers.”
