Taxi

Yesterday morning, I got on a taxi to Kamwenge. Along came an elderly woman with her 23 year/thereabout old son. He looked very ill. They got onboard and 30 minutes out of Kampala, he died. The woman held his head to her chest and stared blankly out the window for a long time.

While death separates us from our loved ones, it’s a tragedy that unites humanity. Strangers held her while her world crashed to her feet, and made room for the body. She alighted at the Rwamwanja refugee centre. Crying for the first time, when she saw relatives waiting.

I hope that on that lonely and terrifying journey, she found some solace in the kindness of strangers. And that we all shall be in the company of such people if tragedy ever befalls us among strangers. May his soul rest in peace.

The writer was a passenger in the same taxi.
