UCC speaks out on DSTV boycott campaign

By Executive Editor

Uganda Communications Commission – UCC – has spoken out on an on-going social media campaign intended to boycott services of DSTV in Uganda.

Eng. Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, the Executive Director, UCC says “Price increases are always uncomfortable and sometimes a contentious issues between providers/suppliers & consumers.”

“UCC acknowledges affordability as key to uptake of communications services & are on a continuous strife to realise this across the communications sector. UCC promotes cost oriented pricing by licensed providers, balancing ensuring sustainable provision of quality services and affordability,” explains, Eng. Kaggwa.

She attributes the increases to what she describes the “recent re-organisation within Multichoice” which the regulator notes “coincided with global economic downturn that impacted costs of supplies to operations.”

“Costs include acquiring content, equipment + local operational costs. The ecosystem market thus caused challenges to the operational plans.”

Eng. Kaggwa pledged UCC’s “commits to continue engaging DSTV on the plight of the Ugandan consumers to ensure a worthy service is offered.”
