Uganda Airlines adds second aircraft on Entebbe-Johannesburg route

Uganda Airlines has announced the addition of an A320-200 aircraft on the Entebbe-Johannesburg route, significantly boosting its available seats from 78 on the CRJ900 to 160 seats. This move effectively doubles the airline’s passenger capacity.

The A320-200 aircraft, wet-leased from South African ACMI specialist Global Airways will initially fill the medium-haul gap in Uganda Airlines’ operations.

Starting immediately, it will operate four out of the seven weekly flights on the Johannesburg route. The remaining three weekly flights will continue to be serviced by the CRJ900.

In addition to Johannesburg, the A320-200 will also be deployed on scheduled flights to Nairobi, Lagos, and Kinshasa. These routes have experienced significant growth, and the A320’s increased capacity will help alleviate operational challenges due to capacity shortfalls.

Monica Rubombora, Uganda Airlines Country Manager for South Africa, stated that the addition of the A320 to its fleet is a strategic enhancement that allows the airline to better serve its passengers on key routes. “This aircraft will enable us to meet the growing demand while continuing to deliver the high standards of service that our customers have come to expect from Uganda Airlines.”

Rubombora emphasised that demand on the Johannesburg route has grown since it started operating in May 2021 and that it had introduced certain pressures into Uganda Airlines’ operations. The A320 will add much-needed flexibility and eliminate weight restrictions, particularly on this route.

The 160-seat A320 aircraft is configured with a two-class cabin, featuring 12 business class and 138 economy seats, enhancing passenger comfort and service quality.

This August, Uganda Airlines proudly celebrates its fifth anniversary of operations, marking half a decade of connecting East Africa with the world and providing exceptional service to its passengers.
