The 2nd Edition of the Africa Military Games was officially opened in Abuja on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, in a grand ceremony held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. The event was presided over by Nigeria’s Vice President, H.E. Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
In his address, Vice President Shettima commended the African military forces for championing Pan-African unity through sports. He lauded the Organisation for Military Sports in Africa (OSMA) and the 26 participating African countries for their efforts in fostering a sense of brotherhood across the continent.
“These games are a symbol of our shared heritage and aspirations. They strengthen our bonds as Africans and contribute to the enhancement of African security, culture, and unity,” Shettima stated.
The last edition of the Africa Military Games was held in Kenya in 2002, making this year’s event a long-anticipated comeback. Uganda is among the participating countries, fielding a delegation of 27 athletes, mainly boxers and runners, led by Brigadier General Richard Karemire, Joint Staff Officer for Formal Education, Sports, and Culture.

The Africa Military Games will run until November 30, 2024, with participants competing in various disciplines aimed at fostering camaraderie, enhancing military readiness, and promoting Pan-Africanism through sports.
