UHRC tasks law enforcement agencies on violence at Jakana burial

Uganda Human Rights Commission has tasked law enforcement agencies on violence at the burial of political activist, Jakana Nadduli. Nadduli died at the weekend and was buried Monday at Kaddunda, Semuto in Nakaseke district. However, midway the exercise, violence erupted, with one faction standing up against the other.

In a statement Wednesday, the Commission says it is “appalled by the violent actions and indecent behaviour exhibited by a section of mourners.”

“Mob action infringes on the victim’s rights of presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court. It also results into acts of torture or cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment and many times results into loss of life which has far reaching consequences on the families of victims,” Commission Chairperson, Marriam Wangadya said.

According to Wangadya, “The Commission calls on law enforcement agencies to carry out expeditious investigations into the incident, with a view of apprehending and charging those who perpetrated the violence.”

The Commission tasked the Police to “strengthen its community policing and neighborhood watch programmes across the country in order to forestall acts of criminality like the one in question, from the communities.”
