Umeme Limited has warned shareholders, prospective investors, and the general public that it will most likely register a loss for the financial year ended 31st December 2025.
In a public notice dated 29th January 2026, the Board of Directors said the projected loss follows an assessment of the company’s financial performance after the end of its 20-year electricity distribution concession in Uganda.
The company explained that it had already incurred a loss in the year ended 2024 and now expects a consecutive loss for 2025. This, Umeme noted, is primarily due to the cessation of operating revenue at the end of the first quarter of 2025, following the natural expiry of the electricity distribution concession on 31st March 2025.
“As previously communicated at the Annual General Meeting held on 18th July 2025, the Company incurred a loss for the year ended 2024 and shall likely register a consecutive loss for the year ended 31st December 2025,” the statement reads.
Umeme added that it is actively pursuing outstanding claims against the Government of Uganda through the ongoing dispute resolution process provided for under the Privatization Agreements. The company said shareholders and stakeholders will be kept informed of any material developments arising from this process.
Further details on Umeme’s financial performance and the basis of the expected loss will be disclosed in the company’s annual report and audited financial statements for the year ended 31st December 2025, once the audit process is completed.
Umeme’s electricity distribution concession formally ended in March 2025, marking the close of its operational role in Uganda’s power distribution sector after two decades.
