The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) enforcement teams have intercepted a large consignment of smuggled rice in a targeted operation aimed at curbing illicit trade ahead of the Christmas festive season.
The interception was carried out by the Malaba enforcement team following intelligence reports that smugglers were planning to ferry rice from Kenya into Uganda through porous border points. Acting on the information, officers mounted an operation that led to the interception of a truck along the Tororo–Busitema Road.
The truck, a Sino model, was found transporting assorted undeclared rice consignments, including 130 bags of Baraf rice weighing 25 kilograms each, two cartons of Mohmood rice weighing 40 kilograms each, and one carton of Hilal rice weighing 40 kilograms.
URA confirmed that the entire consignment has been seized and is being held as evidence as investigations continue. The authority noted that procedures for managing the offence are underway in line with existing customs and tax laws.
The operation is part of URA’s broader festive-season enforcement drive aimed at protecting legitimate businesses, safeguarding government revenue, and preventing the circulation of smuggled goods on the local market.
URA has urged members of the public to support ongoing enforcement efforts by reporting suspected smuggling and tax evasion through established channels, emphasizing that public vigilance remains critical in the fight against illicit trade.
