The Secretary General of the largest opposition political party (by representation in Parliament), David Lewis (commonly known as Rubongoya), has revealed why he chose to drop teaching Constitutional Law.
Rubongoya was a lecturer at both Cavendish University and the International University of East Africa.
He is a graduate of Harvard, U.S., (Master of Laws degree, with a special focus on constitutional law).
He is also a graduate of Oxford, U.K. (master’s degree in International Human Rights Law).
“Between 2016 and 2018, it was very depressing for me to teach constitutional law here in Uganda. You find that every single principle you’re teaching is being violated with impunity- separation of powers, judicial independence, sanctity of Parliament, Supremacy of the Constitution, etc.” said Rubongoya, Bobi Wine’s teacher, in a post on X last night.
In many ways, he added, “it’s what informed my decision to suspend teaching and descend into the arena so we can try to change things.”
“I wonder how it is for those teaching constitutional law now seeing we’re effectively back to the rule by decrees,” he added.
