Ssemakadde

By last evening, social media, especially X, was awash with reports that the Secretary General (SG) of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) has expelled his President, Isaac Ssemakadde.

However, the ULS Vice President had this to say in response to Phillip Munaabi’s letter:

Members, we are outraged as you are at the dubious statement issued by our honorary secretary, Phillip Munaabi. Disregard it with the contempt that it deserves.

The #RadicalNewBar President
@IsaacSsemakadde
and I, your Vice President, are still in charge.

Anthony Asiimwe, ULS Vice President

Although Munaabi cites the Law for Council to have expelled Ssemakadde, the same law states that:

2. A person shall cease to be a member of the Council if he or she

a) resigns;

b) is disqualified, barred, or suspended from practicing as an advocate in Uganda or a country other than Uganda;

c) is certified to be of unsound mind;

d) is appointed to any position that creates a conflict of interest with his or her leadership on the Council;

e) is under sentence of death or imprisonment exceeding six months by a court of competent jurisdiction without the option of a fine; and

f) is removed by special resolution of members of the Society voting at a general meeting.
