Jet Tumwebaze
A top Kampala-based lawyer, Jet Tumwebaze, has declared his bid to run for the Mawogola North Parliamentary seat in Ssembabule during the 2026 general elections, setting up what could be a heated contest against President Yoweri Museveni’s brother, Sodo Kaguta.
The incumbent MP, Shartsi Musherure, recently announced that she will not seek re-election. Her withdrawal sparked speculation that she was stepping aside in line with a 2021 pact that had allowed her to go through unopposed while leaving the door open for Sodo Kaguta in the next election cycle.
However, the entry of Tumwebaze—an outspoken lawyer with an international reputation as a rule of law advocate—appears to complicate Kaguta’s path back to Parliament.
“The younger Kaguta doesn’t seem to have any serious ideas to advance the cause of the people of Mawogola North except for saying that his big brother told him back in 2021 to ‘let Hon. Shartsi go through this time, but next time, you can come back,’” said Anthony Natif, a political commentator.
He added: “Mr Jet Tumwebaze, a man not known to mince words, has thrown a wrench in the works. The people of Mawogola North now have a serious decision to make—between an entitled wheeler-dealer, bereft of ideas, and a courtroom pugilist determined to champion the rule of law. Grab some popcorn, this promises to be a movie!”
Tumwebaze’s candidacy signals what may become one of the most closely watched constituency battles ahead of the 2026 polls.
