Fort Fortal City NUP leader wanted over violent clashes with security

By Davis Mugabi

The leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in charge of Fort Portal City is on the run following violent clashes between the NUP supporters and security in Rwenzori Region.

A source says that Hafitha Kasemire, a born of 1996, was recently leading her team in the region during a party-activity, when they faced off with security.

During the face-off, a number of NUP supporters were injured, while some were arrested in the scuffle.

One of those who were part of the activity says that Kasemire escaped arrest and disappeared in thin air.

However, security has mounted a manhunt for her.

Police Spokesperson for Rwenzori West Vicent Twesigye says that Kasemire and a few others are wanted for charges of inciting violence.

“It is true that we are looking for Kasemire and her accomplices,” said Twesigye in a telephone interview.

According to Twesigye, Kasemire faces another charge of disobeying lawful orders, after she convened a party meeting without following the provisions of the Public Order Management Act (POMA).

Our attempts to reach Kasemire went futile.

Her family source says that Kasemire is fearing for her life.

On many occassions, NUP-Supporters have been arrested and tortured to a near death, while those that remain in the custody of the Police have no hope of regaining their freedom, as they are tried before the military court.
