On Friday night, Kampala Metropolitan Police released a statement revealing that experienced IT specialist and digital marketer John Birungi Babkrukamu had died by suicide.
The incident, police said, occurred at Tagore Living, located on Turnell Drive in Kamwokya, Central Division in Kampala.
Babirukamu had booked into the premises on May 30, 2024.
Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased is believed to have jumped from the Level 2D balcony, fallen into the neighbor’s compound, and died instantly.
His body was conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a post-mortem examination.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, before Babirukamu booked into Tagore Living, he was in charge of an event in which ACIBADEM, a leading medical group in the private healthcare sector in Turkey, opened its first information office in Uganda. The day, graced by Uganda’s Ambassador to Turkey, Nusurah Tiperu, and Mehmet Fatih AK, the Ambassador of Turkey to Uganda, was long. It started at the Skyz Hotel in Naguru with a media briefing. Babirukamu was jolly and calm, ensuring that everyone was comfortable. He also ensured that everyone entered the buses to Acacia Mall, where ACIBADEM’s offices were opened. He was the last person to enter the second bus from Naguru, after ensuring no one was left behind. At Acacia Mall, Babirukamu ensured that all went well, walking in and out of the offices, all ensuring that the event ended in success. There was cake-cutting and bottle-popping. Babirukamu popped over 10 Champagne bottles for the high-end guests. After the event, Babirukamu ensured that all his guests left with gift hampers. “This is called Turkish Delight,” Babirukamu explained to his guests, one of the items in the gift hampers.

“I condole with the family of the late Erick and Canon Jolly Babirukamu on the passing of their son John. I have read the outpouring of tributes by young people on social media, and Uganda has truly lost a giant, a mentor, and a torchbearer in our digital landscape. We thank God for the 40 years he gave us with John, and we pray that the Almighty God will comfort the Babirukamu family and John’s friends in this time of grief and that He will grant our son John eternal rest,” said ex-Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.
