An NGO operating in Gulu District has laid off more than 300 employees, leaving workers and residents seeking answers about the reasons behind the decision.
The mass layoffs reportedly took place on Monday, October 5, 2026. Details about the affected departments, the workers’ contracts and whether the organisation plans to provide severance packages were not immediately available.
Isaac Opio, a resident of Gulu, said it was unclear why the organisation had taken the decision.
“As of yesterday 05.10.2026, an organization operating in Gulu, Uganda 🇺🇬 laid off over 300 staff. Just like that,” said Opio.
The NGO has been identified as Kijani Forestry, an organisation that has expanded rapidly in recent years. It has become one of the largest employers in Northern Uganda, developed what is described as the country’s most extensive farmer network and established itself as a global leader in reforestation.
The reported layoffs could affect hundreds of households in the region, where non-governmental organisations play a significant role in providing employment and supporting community-based programmes.
The circumstances surrounding the decision remained unclear by the time of publication. Kijani Forestry had not issued a public statement explaining the layoffs or indicating whether further job cuts were expected.
