NRM National Vice Chairman Alhaj Moses Kigongo has reportedly persuaded Arinaitwe Frank Rukanirwa to step down from contesting against Security Minister Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Jim Muhwezi in the 2026 Rujumbura parliamentary race.
Rukanirwa, who had expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the recent NRM primaries, had announced plans to challenge Muhwezi as an independent candidate. However, after hours of mediation led by Kigongo, he is said to have agreed to withdraw his candidacy in favor of party unity.
Muhwezi praised Kigongo for his intervention, describing it as critical to strengthening cohesion within the NRM.
“As a party, our strength comes from our ability to eliminate any potential for irreconcilable differences within our structures. I thank our Vice Chairperson, Alhaj Moses Kigongo, for his purposeful approach to fostering unity and harmony within the party,” said Muhwezi.

The development comes at a time when Muhwezi’s political future appeared uncertain. He was recently defeated in the NRM Veterans League elections by a younger contender, ending his 15-year hold on that position.

With Rukanirwa’s withdrawal, Muhwezi now enjoys a clear path to defend his parliamentary seat in the 2026 polls. If successful, the win would extend his political career and maintain his influence within NRM’s inner circles for another five years.
