A 59-year-old man has been shot dead in Kitagwenda District after his sons allegedly attacked police officers who were effecting his arrest over a domestic violence case.
The incident occurred on December 28, 2025, at around 9:00 a.m. in Rwenkubebe Parish, Nyabbani Sub-county, within the Rwenzori West policing region.
According to a police report from Nyabbani Police Station, the deceased has been identified as Bagubwa Felisian, a peasant resident of Rwenkubebe A village. Police had been following up a domestic violence complaint reported a day earlier at the same station.
On December 27, two officers—Cpl Kimanywenda Jocus and Pc Tumuhirwe Isa—were dispatched to arrest Bagubwa. They reportedly found him at a bar in Rwenkubebe Trading Centre, arrested him, handcuffed him, and began escorting him towards his home where a boda boda rider was waiting to transport him.
Police state that upon reaching near his home, Bagubwa refused to board the motorcycle. At that point, his three sons allegedly emerged armed with pangas and hoes and attacked the officers. One of the sons, identified as Atwebembire Ronald, is said to have cut Cpl Kimanywenda on the head with a panga, leaving him critically injured.
During the struggle, Bagubwa reportedly attempted to grab the police firearm. In the ensuing chaos, shots were fired, and Bagubwa was hit. He later succumbed to the gunshot wounds. His sons fled the scene immediately after.
Police recovered an AK-47 rifle with nine rounds of ammunition, as well as 18 cartridge shells from the scene. Blood samples were collected, photographs taken, and the scene documented by the district scenes-of-crime officer. The body was conveyed to Ntara Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Cpl Kimanywenda Jocus was rushed to Ntara Health Centre IV, where he remains admitted in critical condition.
Police say the suspects who attacked the officers are still on the run, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
