Makerere University has initiated a process for picking a new Chancellor. The Chancellor is the titular Head of the University and presides over all ceremonial assemblies of the University and confers degrees and other academic titles and distinctions of the University. The Chancellor is appointed to hold office for a term of four years and may be renewed for one further term.
The outgoing Chancellor is Prof. Ezra Suruma, 78. He became the University’s Chancellor in 2016.
In a notice published on Monday morning, the University is looking to appoint a new Chancellor.
Elegible Nominees must be:
Ugandan
Have at least a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized higher institution of learning.
Be an eminent person of high integrity with good public relations.
Be between the minimum age of 55 and the maximum age of 75 at the time of nomination.
Not be a serving Chancellor, Vice Chancellor or staff of any academic institution.
According to the University Secretary and Secretary to the University Council, Simon Kizito, the position does not attract a salary. However, the successful candidate will be facilitated whenever he/she attends to official duties and is entitled to a retainer allowance at a rate approved by the University Council.
Deadline for nomination is 11th January 2024, at 5:00 p.m. EAT.
