By Davis Mugabi

A suspect resisting arrest last week caused their deaths when he grabbed an UPDF officer who had arrested him in an operation at Nakuwadde Maize Mill in Bulenga, Wakiso district on 07.05.2022.

A source at the army headquarters in Mbuya tells Kampala Gazette that the officer RA 262845 Pte James Kalyowa was part of an operation commanded by S/Sgt Simon Makabugo of Nakuwadde detach to bring to book drug abusers in the area when the team split into three groups. At this point, Kalyowa ran after Enock Mukasa alias Mayinja.

“When Kalyowa arrested him (Mukasa), he (Kalyowa) was overpowered. Mukasa dragged him to a nearby pond and dived in with Kalyowa in his hand. None of them knew how to swim, they drowned to death,” an army source told us last night. The bodies were retrieved and taken to the city mortuary for a postmortem.

The UPDF are yet to issue a statement on the matter.

However, Kampala Gazette understands that the matter was registered at Bulenga Police Station vide CRB 110/2022.
