Funeral arrangements for the deceased are underway.
Lwengo District — Police have identified the bodies of seven members of the same family who died in a fatal road traffic accident along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District.
According to the Traffic Police spokesperson, Michael Kananura, the crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 27, 2025, at about 4:30 a.m. at Njagalakasayi.
The accident involved a Fuso Fighter truck (registration number UBP 510V) and a Toyota Fielder (registration number UBH 476W). Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Fielder, who was travelling from the Masaka side, attempted to overtake a queue of vehicles and collided head-on with the oncoming Fuso truck.
“All seven occupants of the Toyota Fielder died on the spot,” Kananura said, adding that the victims were all members of the same family.
Police have since identified the deceased as Ivan Niwagaba, Brenda Ainembabazi, Sayuni Turihonabwe, and the children Kenon Agaba, Keisha Atuhairwe, and Kenen Masiko. The seventh victim was identified as the man’s brother.

The bodies were retrieved from the scene and conveyed to the mortuary for postmortem examinations as investigations continue.
Following the crash, police issued a renewed appeal to motorists to exercise caution on highways, particularly during night travel.
“We urge all drivers to avoid reckless overtaking, especially at night when visibility is poor,” Kananura said. “Motorists are also advised to limit night travel where possible and ensure they are well-rested to avoid fatigue-related crashes.”
The Masaka–Mbarara Highway remains one of the country’s busiest routes and has been the scene of several fatal accidents, prompting repeated calls from police for responsible driving.
