Police have clarified earlier communication over the death of Lubega Fahad, who died after a mob assault outside DTB Bank at Metroplex Mall, Kiwatule, following an alleged rental fraud. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the incident, which occurred at around 6:30pm in Kazinga Zone, Kiwatule, was duly reported at Kiwatule Police Station under Kira Road Division as CRB 064/2026, contrary to an initial police statement that appeared to suggest it had not taken place. She attributed the error to a communication gap in preliminary information from the station and apologised for the misrepresentation.
Preliminary findings show a client searching for a rental on Jiji Uganda contacted Lubega, 30, who allegedly posed as a property agent and, after showing premises in Kyanja, instructed the victim to deposit Shs12 million—three months’ rent and a security deposit—into a DTB account in his name. After the money was paid on 2 June 2026, the caretaker reportedly informed the client that the house was for sale, not rent, and efforts to reverse the transaction failed because the funds had already been withdrawn. The client later learnt that Lubega had been sighted at the bank, where he was apprehended, but he allegedly escaped while under the watch of a security guard, triggering a chase and mob assault. Police say Lubega was found weak but with no visible torture marks, taken to Kiwatule Police Station and died shortly after arrival; his body was transferred to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem. Investigations into the alleged fraud and mob action are ongoing, with police condemning mob justice and pledging to provide accurate, timely information to the public.
