MISSING: MP Wakabi
Police have addressed reports circulating on social media alleging that Bugahya County Member of Parliament, Pius Wakabi Atwooki, has gone missing.
On Thursday morning, a message widely shared on WhatsApp claimed that the legislator had disappeared, prompting concern among his supporters and the general public. The message, styled as a “missing person” notice, alleged that Wakabi was last seen on January 21, 2026, wearing a black blazer and blue jeans, and appealed to the public for information on his whereabouts.
The notice further listed contact details of individuals said to be family members and urged the public to share the information widely to help locate the lawmaker.
In response, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, Julius Hakiza, confirmed that police are aware of the matter. Speaking to Kampala Gazette, Hakiza said the case was formally reported to police on Wednesday.
“We have knowledge of the reports regarding the alleged disappearance of Hon. Pius Wakabi. The matter was reported to police, and investigations are ongoing,” Hakiza said.
He added that security agencies have commenced efforts to trace the legislator’s whereabouts with the aim of reuniting him with his family.
Police have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, noting that updates will be communicated as investigations progress.
