The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has seized 7,970 rolls of substandard toilet paper in Entebbe and Katanga along Binaisa Road, Kampala.
This operation followed a consumer complaint about street vendors selling unlabelled toilet paper. Further investigation led to the arrest of four suspects and they are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station.
The four suspects are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station and will be produced before the Standards and Utilities court to answer charges related to possession and sale of substandard products, contrary to the UNBS Certification Regulations (Amendment), 2022.
UNBS has developed clear standards to regulate the quality of toilet paper available on the market. These standards outline the specifications necessary for safe and hygienic products. They include: US 126:2019 – Toilet paper – Specification US EAS 355-2:2022 – Jumbo toilet tissue paper – Specification US EAS 355-1:2025 – Regular toilet tissue paper – Specification The public is hereby called upon to be vigilant and report any dealers of suspected substandard products to UNBS through its toll-free line 0800133133/ 0800233233.
The operation came days before Eid-al-Fitr celebrations. After a long month of fasting, the Muslim community was expected to prepare food in abundance, serve, eat, and share with those who may not have what to eat.
