Kampala, Uganda — Tensions within the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) have deepened after Daudi Kabanda has insisted that Jimmy Akena will cease being party president this week, even as the UPC parliamentary caucus reiterated its backing for Akena and dismissed Kabanda’s remarks.
The caucus said it remains united behind Akena and would not be swayed by outside pressure. “We shall not allow any person posed to us by other people,” Dr. Eunice Opia, MP for Oyam North, said.
Kabanda, the MP for Kasambya in Mubende, countered that most UPC MPs do not recognize Akena as the legitimate party president and said Akena would vacate the office this week.
He is aligned to the UPC faction led by Denis Enap.
