Police in Kampala North have arrested a 34-year-old woman, Nanteza Aisha, on allegations of staging her own kidnapping and demanding a ransom of Shs 50 million from her family.
The case was registered on 15th December 2025 after the suspect’s mother, Nakanwagi Rose, a resident of Kasana, Luwero District, reported her daughter missing while travelling from Wakiso to Luwero.
Preliminary police findings indicate that on 12th December 2025 at about 4:00pm, Nanteza, who resides in Katooke, Nabweru, Wakiso District, informed her mother that she was travelling to her home in Luwero later that evening. However, she never arrived.
Concern escalated the following day when the suspect’s sister received a WhatsApp video showing Nanteza appearing restrained in a bush, with her hands, legs, and mouth tied. In the video, a background voice demanded a ransom of Shs 50 million, triggering panic and prompting police to launch intensive investigations.
Following intelligence-led operations and an extensive search, a police task team traced and arrested Nanteza at Kigombe, Luwero District. Investigators later established that the alleged kidnapping had been staged by the suspect herself.
“She is currently in custody and will be arraigned in court to answer the relevant charges,” said SP Kawala Racheal, the Public Relations Officer for Wamala Region.
Police condemned the act, describing it as a serious offence that caused unnecessary fear and diverted security resources from genuine cases. Authorities cautioned the public against filing false criminal reports, noting that such actions are punishable under the law.
