Hoima City — Early results from the National Female Youth Member of Parliament elections indicate a narrow lead for Mercy Kanyesigye, following a tightly contested vote by youth delegates held in Hoima City.
More than 400 delegates convened on Wednesday morning to elect the national female youth MP, with Diana Ampaire and Mercy Kanyesigye emerging as the main contenders. A third candidate, Jalia, was also on the ballot.
Provisional results show that Kanyesigye secured 216 votes, edging Ampaire, who polled 198 votes. Jalia garnered 24 votes.
A total of 439 votes were cast in the election, with one vote declared invalid, according to officials overseeing the exercise.
The close outcome highlights the competitive nature of the youth leadership race, reflecting divisions among delegates as well as strong support bases for the leading candidates. Final confirmation of the results is expected once the Electoral Commission completes tallying and officially declares the winner.
The National Female Youth MP represents youth interests at the national level and plays a key role in advocacy on issues affecting young women across the country.
