Kampala Metropolitan Police have confirmed that Sarah Bireete, the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG), has been presented at Buganda Road Court and is awaiting formal charges.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Bireete was transferred from Nateete Police Station early Tuesday morning and is already within the court premises.
“She is at Buganda Road Court and will be presented before court any time from now,” Owoyesigyire said.
Bireete was arrested several days ago under circumstances that police have yet to fully disclose. Since her arrest, she had been detained at Nateete Police Station, prompting public speculation and concern from civil society actors regarding the reasons for her detention.
Police have maintained that due process is being followed and that details of the charges against her will be communicated once she is formally arraigned before court.
Bireete, a prominent governance and constitutional rights activist, heads the Centre for Constitutional Governance, an organization that has been vocal on accountability, rule of law, and democratic governance issues.
Her court appearance comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the 2026 general elections, with increased scrutiny on the relationship between the state and civil society organizations.
More details are expected to emerge once court proceedings commence.
