Police in Mpigi District have detained a Gateway Bus Company driver after he was found operating a passenger bus while under the influence of alcohol.
According to the Traffic Directorate, Ziringura Ronard, the driver of bus registration number UBM 706X, was arrested on Sunday, 30 November 2025, at 1:56 a.m. after mandatory testing at a police checkpoint confirmed he was intoxicated. He is currently being held at Mpigi Police Station and is expected to appear in court tomorrow to face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Traffic Spokesperson Michael Kananura said the arrest is part of the ongoing nationwide “Arrive Alive” operations, which involve intensified testing of bus and long-distance drivers during the high-travel season.
“Our checkpoints across the country are fully active and continuously testing drivers. We strongly warn and caution all motorists against drinking and driving,” Kananura stated.
He added that drink-driving places passengers and other road users at extreme risk and called on the public to report reckless drivers to nearby police units.
Police emphasized that similar operations will continue throughout the festive travel period to enhance road safety.
“Say NO to drink and drive. Your safety and that of other road users matters.”
