The President of Central African Republic (CAR) Faustin-Archange Touadéra has received Uganda’s Ambassador Farid Kaliisa’s diplomatic credentials days after the Ugandan military trained and passed out CAR soldiers.
Amb Kaliisa said the acceptance of his credentials is part of the increase in the economic, political and social ties between Uganda and CAR.
“We now have a defence partnership between the two countries. Over 1,000 CAR military recruits were trained and passed out in Uganda recently,” Amb Kaliisa said.
Amb Kaliisa is the diplomatic representative of Uganda in the Democratic Republic of Uganda. He also represents Uganda’s interests in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville and Gabon, where Kampala does not have embassies.
The strengthening of the ties between the two countries was ignited by a bilateral meeting between Uganda President Yoweri Museveni and CAR President Touadéra during the Independence Day celebrations in 2024 in Busia District in Uganda.
Amb Kaliisa said the military ties between Uganda and CAR will bring peace and stability in both countries, which is a cornerstone of development.
Instability in CAR led to Lord’s Resistance Army rebels led by Joseph Kony to find safe refuge. Uganda, South Sudan and CAR are cooperating to ensure that they flash out the LRA rebels in CAR’s territory.
“Previously, we signed a memorandum of understanding to construct a road network connecting Uganda and CAR through South Sudan and the DRC via Mahagi connecting through Bangassou in CAR,” Amb Kaliisa said.
Development experts believe that once the construction of the road linking Uganda to CAR is completed, it will boost exports of Ugandan products to regional countries.
Amb Kaliisa said they have also signed agreements to kick start the process to allow Uganda Airlines to fly from Entebbe to Bangui Airport.
He said they are also looking forward to signing bilateral agreements with CAR in areas of education, trade and agriculture.
