Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine
Uganda’s opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has called on his supporters to stage peaceful street demonstrations to protest the outcome of the 2026 presidential election.
Speaking to the BBC on Tuesday, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader said he would not challenge President Yoweri Museveni’s declared victory in court, citing a lack of confidence in the country’s judicial system.
“I don’t believe in the independence of the courts,” Bobi Wine told the BBC, adding that he was instead mobilising supporters to express their dissatisfaction through peaceful protests.
However, reactions from sections of the public, particularly on social media, suggest that many Ugandans are not convinced by the call.
Some critics argue that Bobi Wine should personally lead any demonstrations if he believes in them.
“Please lead the peaceful march yourself, sir,” wrote James Onen, popularly known as Fatboy.
Others drew comparisons with veteran opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye, who previously led protests in person.
“There is no day Besigye ordered Ugandans to go to the streets while he was in hiding. He led each and every protest himself,” wrote social media user Dee Sandy.
Another commenter accused Bobi Wine of exposing his supporters to danger.
“He is sending his supporters to get murdered by Museveni’s son,” one user wrote.
Bobi Wine has remained largely out of public view since rejecting the election results, citing concerns for his safety.
