Music producer Oyerwot Benny Daniel, popularly known as Dan Magic, has hinted that slain rugby star Sydney Gongodyo may have fallen victim to a well-coordinated street theft scheme commonly used by Kampala criminals.

Gongodyo died after a mob attack in Naguru, a Kampala suburb, with many still unsure of what exactly happened in his final moments.

Dan Magic suggests the incident could fit a pattern in which thieves use a woman carrying a bag and several male accomplices to falsely brand an unsuspecting person a thief, provoking mob justice.

According to his account, the gang identifies a target, then the woman bumps into them and either drops her bag or falls down before loudly shouting “Omubbi! Omubbi!” (“Thief! Thief!”). The accomplices quickly move in, pretending to respond to the alarm as they search, harass and beat the victim, drawing in an uninformed crowd that joins the assault.

Dan Magic recalls a friend who survived a similar setup, warning that such schemes are becoming more frequent and alleging that some criminals may even enjoy protection from corrupt security personnel.

He urged the public to remain vigilant on streets and highways, to avoid rushing to judgment in alleged theft incidents, and to recognise that careful observation could prevent more deaths like Gongodyo’s.
