Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) is concerned about the continued detention of suspects recently arrested in an operation in Fort Portal City, Kabarole district.

The suspects are: Kelvin Katungi (pictured), Frank Kanyesigye, Peace Sadat, Latif Ashaba, Isaiah Mugisha and one Ssentongo.

They were arrested on October 1, 2022 and detained at the Central Police Station in Fort Portal.

However, they remain in custody to date.

“Our team was able to go to Fort CPS, to see and talk to them. And we have been following up on their detention and what we have noted is that they have now been in detention beyond the 48-hour mandatory period.”

Article 23 of the Constitution provides that anyone who is arrested, should be taken to court within 48 hours and if not, they are given a police bond.

But according to UHRC Director – Legal – Idah Nakiganda, the Commission is concerned “their detention is beyond the mandatory period of detention (48 hours) and we are urging all the agencies involved in handling this case and investigating it to arraign these suspects before court so that they are formally charged.”
