Marriam Wangadya

Embattled Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) chairperson Marriam Wangadya has resigned from her position, ending a turbulent tenure at the helm of the rights watchdog.

In a letter dated July 6, 2026 and addressed to President Yoweri Museveni, Wangadya tendered her resignation, thanking the Head of State for the chance to serve.

“I hereby render in my resignation as Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission. I thank you for the opportunity to serve Uganda over the years in the promotion and protection of human rights,” reads part of her letter.

Her resignation comes in the wake of widely circulated videos in which she was heard criticising recent appointments to the Commission, accusing the President of naming indebted officers to key positions.

The recordings triggered intense public debate and scrutiny over the internal workings and independence of the UHRC, ultimately piling pressure on Wangadya’s leadership and culminating in her decision to step down.
