Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine
KAMPALA — National Unity Platform (NUP) leader and presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has unveiled an alternative communication platform aimed at sustaining coordination among supporters in the event of an internet shutdown during the 2026 general elections.
In a message posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Kyagulanyi urged supporters to download an application known as BitChat, which he described as a contingency tool should authorities disable internet services.
“Daily reminder to download BitChat from app stores or share the app with comrades who don’t have it yet. We shall use it for communication in case the regime disables internet ahead of the #ProtestVote2026,” Kyagulanyi wrote.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of Uganda’s 2021 general elections, during which the government imposed a nationwide internet and social media blackout in the days leading up to polling. Authorities at the time defended the shutdown as a security measure, while opposition groups and civil society organizations criticized it as an attempt to stifle communication, observation, and political mobilization.
Kyagulanyi has repeatedly expressed concern that similar restrictions could be imposed during the 2026 polls, especially amid heightened political activity and mobilization efforts by opposition groups. NUP officials say uninterrupted communication is critical for election monitoring, coordination of party agents, and sharing information with supporters across the country.
Government officials have not commented on Kyagulanyi’s latest remarks. However, in previous instances, authorities have maintained that any decisions regarding internet access are guided by national security considerations and public order.
Uganda is expected to head to the polls in early 2026 to elect a president, members of parliament, and local government leaders, with President Yoweri Museveni seeking another term in office and the opposition pledging intensified campaigns for political change.
