RIP: Matovu

Former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu has died, prompting tributes from parliamentary leaders, former colleagues and friends. Matovu died on Thursday night, according to lawyer Samuel Muyizzi, who represented him in an election petition challenging Kenan Opio’s victory in the Busiro South parliamentary race.

Muyizzi said Matovu’s legal team had remained hopeful of winning the petition, arguing that the former MP had prevailed on almost all the issues in contention. However, he said they were disappointed that the case had come to an end following Matovu’s death.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa described Matovu as a dedicated legislator who served the people of Busiro South with commitment during the 11th Parliament.

“It is very sad to learn of the death of our brother Hon. Charles Matovu, former Member of Parliament for Busiro South, who passed on yesterday. Hon. Matovu represented his people with vigor and utmost dedication in the 11th Parliament. He was a member of the Parliamentary football team, where his tremendous contribution led us to dominate the East African Parliamentary games. My condolences go out to his family, the people of Busiro South, and the country at large. May he rest in eternal peace,” Tayebwa said.

Matovu’s former parliamentary football teammate, Hassan Magogo, also mourned him as a close friend whose relationship with him continued beyond their time in Parliament.

“Just received the devastating news of the passing on of my best friend Hon. Matovu Charles

We became the BEST of friend in the 11th Parliament and our friendship continued to his death.

We patrolled the 3-man Parliamentary Football Club midfield together with Hon. Nsereko and conquered East Africa. It was a privilege to play along side the dancing midfielder

I must accept 2026 has been my toughest year in all my life

Rest in Power my man until we meet and play football again

May the Almighty Allah strengthen the loved ones he has left behind and also judge his earthly works with mercy,” Magogo said.
