RIP: Dr. Wilfred Olila
Lira — The High Court has sentenced Mugerwa Paul to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the murder of Dr. Olila Wilfred, bringing closure to a case that shocked the Lango sub-region.
The sentence was handed down by Hon. Lady Justice Sarah Birungi Kalibala, who also imposed an additional 20-year sentence on Mugerwa for aggravated robbery.
Court heard that Mugerwa, an employee of a health insurance company based in Mbale, orchestrated the kidnapping of Dr. Olila from Lira Hotel in January 2025. He later killed him and disposed of the body in Kalaki District.
Dr. Olila, a retired medical doctor, was widely respected in the region and operated New Moroto Nursing Home in Lira, where he specialised in ear, nose, and throat care.
His death sent shockwaves through the community, with many mourning the loss of a dedicated health professional who had served the region for years.
The conviction and sentencing have been seen as a strong statement from the judiciary on accountability and the protection of human life.
The prosecution in the case was led by Chief State Attorney and Lira Regional Officer, Jonathan Okello.
