Pr. Kakande's Church at Kubiri near Mulago
As investigations continue into the mysterious death of a chef at Pastor Samuel Kakande’s Temple Mount Church in Kubiri, questions are being raised about whether efforts were made to keep information about the incident from reaching the media.
Kakaire Jonah Moses, a 28-year-old former chef at the church, died on 1 October 2026. Police were alerted by the deceased’s brother, after which Kakaire’s body was transported by Rhino Funeral Services to his ancestral home in Waina, Mayuge District. He was buried on 4 October 2026.
However, concerns raised by Kakaire’s relatives about the circumstances surrounding his death prompted his brother to return to Kampala on 5 October and ask police to establish what had happened.
A General Enquiry File was subsequently opened at Wandegeya Police Station. Police recorded statements from the deceased’s relatives, some church members and workers from Rhino Funeral Services. CCTV footage from the church was also retrieved and reviewed by ICT experts, while Scene of Crime Officers processed the relevant area.
Several individuals were questioned as part of the inquiry. Preliminary findings indicated that Kakaire may have slipped and fallen into the lift shaft as the lift was moving upwards, after which the lift reportedly returned and struck his head.
Police also established that the deceased had been taken to Mulago City Mortuary without a corresponding case being registered at the time.
But while police sources say investigations are ongoing, critics have questioned the extent and transparency of the inquiry. The family remains concerned that the circumstances surrounding Kakaire’s death may never be fully established.
It has also emerged that Kakande allegedly handed Shs40 million to a senior police officer in the area to prevent information about the incident from reaching the media. A high-ranking officer, whom we will identify as Musa, allegedly pocketed the money, after which no further information was allowed to be disclosed.
The allegation has not been formally confirmed by police, and no evidence has been publicly released to substantiate it. Police have also not issued a formal communication explaining what happened at the church or the circumstances that led to Kakaire’s death.
For the family, the absence of an official report has deepened anxiety and raised fears that they may never learn what caused Kakaire’s death. They are now calling for a transparent and independent investigation into the incident, including the handling of information by the church, funeral service providers and police.
