Joint security forces in the West Nile region have neutralized a suspected armed robber during an exchange of fire in Yamba Village, Kojuwa Parish, Midigo Town Council, Yumbe District.
The deceased has been identified as Cpl Daniel Agweli, a 27-year-old male, confirmed to be an active-duty officer of the South Sudan Army, attached to the Ajio Detachment in South Sudan. He was initially believed to be serving with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
According to the North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Collins Asea, the incident stemmed from a reported armed robbery that occurred on 19 December 2025 at about 3:00 p.m. The victim, Mr. Byansi Tom, a 30-year-old charcoal dealer, reported that an armed individual dressed in South Sudan Army uniform robbed him of a Senke motorcycle, a mobile phone, and UGX 500,000 in cash.
Following the report, joint security forces led by Lt. Masendi Moris, Officer Commanding Okupia UPDF Detachment, immediately launched a pursuit operation. The suspect was later located in Yamba Village, where he allegedly opened fire upon encountering security personnel.
“The suspect engaged the security team by opening fire, prompting a defensive response that resulted in him being neutralized on the spot,” SP Asea said.

Thirteen additional rounds of ammunition

A mobile phone (SIM card missing)
All exhibits were secured and handed over to police for forensic examination. The suspect’s body was transported to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which revealed gunshot wounds to the right arm and head.
Police also confirmed the arrest of one additional suspect, identified as Mawa Joseph, who is currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
Joint security agencies are coordinating with South Sudanese authorities to address the cross-border implications of the incident. Investigations are ongoing.
Police have meanwhile urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially during the festive season.
