UNICEF has expressed grief over recent road accidents that have killed school-going children in Uganda, saying the deaths were preventable and calling for stronger action to protect pupils on the roads.
“UNICEF is deeply saddened by the recent road accidents that have claimed the lives of school-going children in Uganda, leaving families, schools and communities in mourning,” UNICEF Representative to Uganda Dr Robin Nandy said in a statement dated July 22, 2026.
“These are preventable deaths, and every child lost on Uganda’s roads is one too many.”
He said the agency commends government and education ministry efforts, but urged more action to curb speeding near schools, improve crossings and walking paths, and strengthen emergency care.
24 people including 21 children died in a crash in Kapchorwa . The tragedy occurred on the evening of Thursday, July 16, 2026, as pupils from King David Junior School in Kampala were returning from an educational field trip to Sipi Falls.
