The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has given taxpayers a 30-day window to clear outstanding arrears, file pending returns and benefit from a waiver on penalties and interest before the June 30 deadline.

Speaking ahead of the close of the 2025/2026 financial year, URA commissioner-general John Rujoki Musinguzi said the authority is confident of meeting its sh36.7 trillion revenue target if taxpayers comply on time, noting that “compliance is a shared responsibility” that helps fund essential public services.

Musinguzi said URA is relying on technology, improved service delivery and intensified taxpayer education to make compliance easier, urging taxpayers to file returns even if they cannot settle their full liabilities immediately, as timely filing reduces penalties and supports consideration of payment plans.

The current waiver applies to taxes such as VAT, Pay As You Earn and income tax, provided the principal tax is paid in full by June 30; after that, penalties and interest will apply in full. Warning against last-minute payments due to system congestion and bank delays, Musinguzi encouraged businesses to “beat the clock,” take advantage of the waiver and start the new financial year compliant. Established in 1991 under the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, URA is mandated to assess, collect and account for central government taxes and revenues.
