Police in Mityana have rescued 48 dogs and arrested three suspects in an intelligence-led operation targeting illegal dog care houses in the areas of Kansuleti, Kasimbi and Bamunanika, Busimbi Division, Mityana Municipality. The facilities had become a public concern due to the cruel treatment of the animals and the potential risk they posed to the community.

According to Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP L. Kigozi, some of the dogs had intentional injuries, including broken limbs and cut tails, and many appeared malnourished. “These dogs had no vaccination records, which made them even more dangerous to the public in the event of escape,” Kigozi said. The animals were handed over to Animal Lifeline Uganda, a registered NGO with a holding ground in Kateete Cell, Kireku Ward, Busimbi Division, for rehabilitation. The NGO, working with the District Veterinary Officer, will vaccinate the dogs, control their breeding and later invite members of the public to adopt them.

Police say the three suspects will be charged in court with offences related to cruelty to animals and any other charges as advised by the Resident State Attorney. SSP Kigozi urged genuine animal lovers wishing to care for stray dogs to “go through the requisite legal formalities before engaging in such activities in our communities.”
