RIP: Ssegirinya
13 contestants have formally shown interest in the Kawempe North MP seat.
The seat fell vacant after the death of Mohammad Ssegirinya in January.
The constituency goes to the polls on March 13, 2025.
Erias Luyimbazi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) could be the biggest contender along with FDC’s Kalifa Aganaga and NRM’s Faridah Nambi. However, two faces and names will shape the race. These are Ssegirinya’s former personal assistant, Alex Luswa Luwemba, and the former lawmaker’s widow, Twahirah Akandinda Ssegirinya. Although the widow has pulled out of the race in favor of Nalukoola, she remains a force to stand by. Sympathy votes, which would have ordinarily gone to her, will find their way to Nalukoola. Ssegirinya’s former PA is on the ballot. He, too, is likely to attract sympathy votes given that he worked very well and for a long time with the deceased MP.
The country has seen recent by-elections get shaped by sympathy votes.
In the Kisoro Woman by-election, although the NRM had a candidate, an independent-leaning NRM candidate won the polls. She was backed by Dr. Mateke, whose deceased daughter, Sarah, was being replaced.
