Lukwago addressing court on zoom

On Tuesday morning, Lukwago was brought back to court under a cloud of pain, uncertainty, and deep emotion, only to be remanded yet again despite his plea for bail.

What should have been another routine hearing instead turned into a heart-wrenching appeal for mercy, as he spoke openly about the suffering he says he is enduring and the fear that hangs over him each day.

With visible anguish, Lukwago told the court that doctors had advised him to remain in a well-ventilated place, but that prison conditions do not allow for such care. He described his situation as a slow, painful descent, saying he felt “sentenced to death” if nothing is done to address his medical condition. In a plea that left the courtroom with a heavy silence, he asked for palliative care, saying he would rather be allowed “to die the less painful death” than continue living through unbearable pain.

He also prayed to Allah, asking to be spared suffering, and said plainly that while death is inevitable for all, he did not want his final days to be marked by agony.
