The Police Minerals Protection Unit (PMPU) is investigating an alleged gold scam in which a South African national was reportedly defrauded of more than USD 103,000 in a bogus gold transaction in Kampala.

According to police, the complainant, identified as Mr. Attlee Shaun Robert Lloyd, filed a report on 19 May 2026 after losing USD 103,050. He was allegedly introduced to individuals operating under the company name Huanqui Precious Metal Trading Limited, based in Buziga, Makindye Division, who promised to sell and export gold to Dubai. Preliminary findings indicate that Mr. Lloyd paid money purportedly to cover insurance, taxes, and logistics for the shipment. However, the gold was never exported, and repeated demands for additional funds raised his suspicions, prompting him to seek police intervention.

A search at the company’s premises led to the recovery of several exhibits, including suspected gold bars and nuggets, a motor vehicle, passports, identification cards, a precious metals analyser, and assorted documents. Four suspects — Ogwang Edson, Safari Ronald, Karumba Joseph, and Opio Jacob — have been arrested and are being held to assist with investigations. Samples of the recovered metallic substances have been sent to the Government Analytical Laboratory in Entebbe for examination. Police have also contacted the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development to verify the company’s registration and licensing status.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said investigations are ongoing to trace additional suspects, recover the complainant’s money, and establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged fraud. Further updates will be issued as inquiries progress
