Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among narrowly escaped a road crash this evening when her official vehicle was nearly hit by a trailer along the Kampala–Jinja highway in Mukono District.

According to a statement from Chris Obore, the Director of Communication at Parliament of Uganda, the incident occurred on Saturday at around 5:45 p.m. as the Speaker was returning to Kampala from Bugweri District, where she had been campaigning for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in her capacity as the NRM Second Vice Chairperson (Female).

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the trailer, which was headed toward Jinja, swerved into the Speaker’s lane shortly after several vehicles in her convoy had passed. The Speaker’s driver quickly steered to the edge of the road, narrowly avoiding a collision.

Police in Mukono have since arrested the trailer’s driver, Lubega Ivan (32), and his co-driver, Waiswa Amis, to assist with investigations into the incident.

Authorities have not reported any injuries, and the Speaker’s convoy safely proceeded to Kampala following the scare.
