Kampala—A video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) has captured the dramatic moment when boda-boda riders apprehended Obed Mugwisa, the prime suspect in the murder of former rugby star Sydney Gongodyo. The arrest took place on Tuesday after days of searching for Mugwisa, who was previously seen in footage striking Gongodyo with a large log during the fatal mob attack.
Police confirmed that Mugwisa was arrested alongside a security guard, Owino, who is alleged to have delivered the final blow that led to Gongodyo’s death. The two suspects were handed over to authorities for further investigation.

Sydney Gongodyo was laid to rest on Tuesday, with the incident sparking widespread outrage and renewed calls for an end to mob justice. The video of the arrest has since gone viral, highlighting the role of community members in bringing suspects to justice.

Police’s press statement on Obed’s arrest
Two additional suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of Sydney Gongodyo, a professional rugby player, following an incident that occurred on 5 June 2026.
The suspects have been identified as Mugwiisa Obed and Owino Joseph, a security guard. Mugwiisa Obed was captured in video footage wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a large log during the incident. During interrogation, he led investigators to a local laundry (dobbi) where he had taken the yellow T-shirt he was seen wearing on the day of the attack. The garment was subsequently recovered as part of the ongoing investigations.

Their arrest brings the total number of suspects currently in custody to ten (10) as investigations into the alleged mob killing continue.
Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the incident.
