Hope for improved sickle-cell diagnostics in northern Uganda has received a significant boost following the successful second edition of the Uhuru Sickle Cell Run held on October 4 in Lira City. Using proceeds from the charity run, Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative has acquired two new HB electrophoresis machines for Apac General Hospital and Amolatar Health Centre IV, enhancing the region’s capacity to diagnose sickle-cell disease accurately and promptly.

In a further breakthrough, Stanbic Bank Uganda donated a third HB electrophoresis machine valued at UGX 21 million to support the Initiative’s ongoing community outreach programmes. The new equipment is expected to expand early diagnosis and timely intervention for thousands of children and families who are unaware of their sickle-cell status.

Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative expressed deep appreciation to all supporters. “We are forever grateful for the remarkable commitment shown by our sponsors and partners. These machines will save lives,” said Daniel Roy O’dur, CEO of the Initiative. He added that preparations are already underway for the third edition of the Uhuru Sickle Cell Run in 2026.

The Initiative extended special recognition to: Office of the First Lady Mama Janet Kataaha Museveni, Bank of Uganda, Uhuru Institute for Social Development, Kenya Commercial Bank, Agro Supply Limited, Stanbic Bank Uganda, Land and Equity Movement in Uganda, Vintage Lounge, Nation Media Group, Amazon Pub, Uganda National Oil Company, Sky Water, Voice of Lango FM, Radio Unity, Mandela Millers, Ministry of Health, C-Care Uganda, Lira Regional Referral Hospital, and other partners.

The acquisition of the machines marks a major step forward in strengthening sickle-cell awareness, diagnosis, and care in northern Uganda—an effort that continues to gain momentum with each edition of the Uhuru Sickle Cell Run.
