Gen. Otema being welcomed home after his retirement from the army.
Family, friends and relatives of Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Charles Otema Awany on Friday welcomed him back to his ancestral home in Purongo-Tangi Village, where they held a ritual to mark his return from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces after his retirement a few days ago.
Otema was among 19 generals retired from the UPDF this week, closing a military career that spanned 47 years.
His brother, Richard Todwong, said the same elders who blessed Otema to join the army had now received him back home with dignity, pride and honour. “Today, we received Rtd. Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany back to our ancestral home in Purongo-Tangi Village,” Todwong said. “It is here that he received the blessings of his elders to join the military, and today, the same elders and the same community have received him back with dignity, pride and honour. We give God all the glory for this remarkable journey of service to our nation.”
