The death toll from the tragic crash involving pupils of King David Junior School at Kaserem along the Kapchorwa–Mbale Road has risen to 24 after three more pupils died while receiving treatment.
Police say 18 bodies have been positively identified, while three unidentified bodies remain at Kapchorwa Hospital and three are at Mbale Hospital, with 23 victims still admitted and under care.
All surviving pupils who did not require admission have since returned to Kampala aboard a Gateway Bus. SP Kananura Michael said the driver of the bus has not yet been formally identified, though he is believed to be among the victims receiving treatment in Mbale.
He added that the Minister of Education and Sports has temporarily suspended all school trips nationwide to allow investigations, tighten safety guidelines, and support road safety sensitization.
“The Uganda Police Force, working closely with the Ministry of Education and Sports and other stakeholders, extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the pupils, staff of King David Junior School, and the entire school community during this difficult time,” Kananura said.
