Police have confirmed the arrest of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Head of Mobilization, Habib Buwembo, along with two other party supporters, ahead of the upcoming polls.
The trio was arrested on Saturday along Masaka Road under circumstances that had not been immediately clarified by authorities.
In a brief statement, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed the arrests.
“The Uganda Police Force would like to confirm the arrest of Buwembo Habib, Katabala Ronald, and Nakakembo Josephine. The three are currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court in due course,” Kawala said.
Police did not disclose the specific charges at the time of the announcement.
The arrests come at a time of heightened political activity as parties intensify mobilization efforts ahead of the elections. Opposition groups have repeatedly accused security agencies of targeting their supporters, claims which police have often denied, insisting that all arrests are based on alleged violations of the law.
